Astrology is a different subject to the science of astronomy! We are astronomers, working on subjects that involve space and the universe around us. This isn’t limited to just stars and black holes though, it can include anything concerning planets, stars, asteroids, the universe etc. so it’s a pretty broad topic! I am myself a geologist so don’t use physics so much in favour of geology and chemistry mainly!

Astrology is a study concerning divination and is *not* a science. It suggests that there is a relationship between astronomical phenomena and human life, which to me is a little silly but some people do believe in it.

Astrology is not really about space — it’s an ancient practice to do with trying to guess the influence of stars and planets on human existence. It has no scientific basis, but it was born long ago, in a “magical” age when science did not exist yet and rational thinking was limited.

People turned to astrology to make sense of their place in the Universe, and feel connected with the cosmos. Astrology gave them answers about the future, and helped them feel reassured that the cosmos was not indifferent to human existence, but that the heavenly gods participated in people’s lives, somehow.

Today we know that all of this is actually non scientific and that planets and stars do not influence our behaviour — but astrology remain in popular culture as a magical practice.

As the others say, Astrology is a way of trying to predict what will happen to you based on your star sign and which planets are in it at a given time. There’s no reason that the planets would influence what happens to a given person though, so I don’t think it’s something worth believing! Plus Astrologers have been using the same months to assign star signs for so long that they’re actually wrong now. For example, people born in September aren’t actually born under Libra at all, but are actually Scorpio. It’s not science and it’s not based on any fact!

Astronomy and Astrophysics, on the other hand, are Sciences based on fact, using measurements of what we see to work out how things work in the Universe. As Nat says, there are loads and loads of different things in space to study, which is why there are lots of Astronomers. Plus, in a way there isn’t anything but space, because everything in the Universe is in space!
