The most common way to get into university, which I did, was to get some A-levels after my GCSEs and apply with the help of your sixth form or college. There are other similar qualifications you can use to get in too though, like the international baccalaureate and BTECs, which you can do at some schools and colleges.

The main thing you might need to do a bit early on is think about which subjects you want to take to let you do the course you want to do at university. I wanted to do physics, so I chose maths and physics A-level, which I needed to get on to a physics course. If you don’t know what you want to do, you can just choose subjects you like and decide later based on which subjects you chose, which should give you a choice of university courses you would also like.

To actually get in, you choose some courses at different universities that you want to try to get on to, usually 5, and send them an application saying why you want to do that subject at that university and what grades you’re expecting. The universities all have open days so that you can see them and decide if you like them. Then the universities send you an offer of certain grades – if you get them, you can choose to go to that university.

Whatever school or college you decide to do your A-levels or whatever you choose to do, they’ll help you with applying, it’s pretty easy!
