Scientists are paid by either governments or Universities they work at.

I am a permanent staff member at Imperial College London, one of the top three Universities in the UK and one of the world’s top ten. This means my salary is paid for by my University, which in turns gets money from the government and from students’ fees.

As scientists, we make a decent living but we don’t earn much money — not compared with other professionals working in the private sector and who have sometimes less qualifications than we do.

But we love our work and that makes up for the smaller money we make!
