To reduce my data. In fact, I’m doing this now. Images and spectra (where light is split up into different wavelengths) don’t come to me from the telescope ready to use – I have to remove background, and electronic effects as well as extracting the spectrum. It’s a somewhat magical process to take an image that doesn’t look great, and to reduce it to reveal what the star is telling you about itself.

There is also a great feeling about knowing that you are the first (and at that point, only) person to look at what a star is made of – that’s actually my favourite part of astronomy.

Get up in the morning, go into work and chat about science with friends over a cup of tea before starting the day!

The big “discoveries” might happen in the lab but the ideas behind them definitely come from being sociable and talking about your science with others, and if that can involve tea as well then it is almost perfect!

Each day, new research astrophysics papers are posted on an online archive, usually about 40 per day, of which 5 – 10 are related to my research interests. So each morning, I make a cup of coffee and read through the day’s listings. If I find something particularly interesting or surprising, I love talking about it with colleagues, or sometimes looking into my own data (or publicly available data) to test something that was in one of the day’s papers. Either independently confirming or (even more fun) refuting research that has only been out for a day, is incredibly exhilarating. You really feel like you are on the cutting edge…because you are.

      Outside work, rock climbing!

At work: Drinking my second coffee in the morning while going through the latest work done by my colleagues and posted on the internet — there is always something new and exciting there!

At home: Playing with my little daughter, and cooking.

      By myself: go out running!

At work, the thing I enjoy most is talking to other Scientists about different ideas and how things work. I also like programming! Programmes let me do less interesting repetitive things really quickly, plus I enjoy writing them, so it’s win-win 🙂

When I’m not at work, I love basketball and doing anything with friends!
